Cistus Essential Oil

Do you remember reading that phrase in the Song of Solomon ("I am a rose of Sharon, a lily of the valleys"). and picturing a rose?!  I was shocked to learn that this is likely not a rose at all, but rather the flower ladanum or rock rose or commonly cistus (hence cistus essential oil!). Albert Barnes writes, "The etymology is in favor of its being a bulbous plant (the white narcissus, Conder). “Sharon” is usually the proper name of the celebrated plain from Joppa to Caesarea, between the hill-country and the sea, and travelers have remarked the abundance of flowers with which this plain is still carpeted in spring." [1]  I love that it is a white flower - since white represents purity its more fitting for Christ then a red rose.  The fact that this flower has a sweet, honey-like scent  reminds…

My Favorite Outdoor Annoyance Spray

As I jumped into the world of essential oils, one of the first things I learned was that whatever is put on your skin (shampoo, lip gloss, lotion, bug spray, etc.) is absorbed by your very porous skin and absorbed in to your bloodstream within seconds. One thing I started looking into was some of the outdoor annoyance sprays that were premade. As I started reading through some of the various ingredients I was really concerned. So..... this summer I was NOT going to put that stuff on my babies! I wanted something completely natural, safe, and effective for my family. Using just these two essential oils (Purification and Peppermint), a little epsom salt and a 2oz glass bottle I made my own outdoor annoyance spray.   So let's first talk about natural - if you are new to essential oils,…

Deep Relief {Post # 5 – Using Essential Oils}

It's been a while since I posted, and much has been going on - including a trip to the Mayo Clinic (that will be another post for a different day). But, I have to tell you that this Deep Relief Roll-On has been saving my life.  Literally.About a year ago, I was in crazy, debilitating pain.  I was weeks away from birthing my second baby, and was on self-imposed bed rest.  Walking was essentially an impossibility.  Fast forward post-birth, and my body continued to deteriorate all summer.  The pain was intense, unforgiving and required dramatic changes in my quality of life.  De-stressing and more sleep have been critical to having more success with my body. Then, this past fall I discovered Deep Relief.   Here's all the good stuff in it:   It is so easy to use.  Locate an area,…

Easy DIY Deodorant

Is your deodorant toxic? Do you have any idea how many crazy ingredients are hiding in your deodorant? So scary! To think I was put that on my body, and allowing it to be absorbed into my body. If you don't believe me, check out this link between antiperspirants and cancer which talks about aluminum in the antiperspirants. Equally scary, I came across this sheet regarding propylene glycol and reproduction toxicity. I also want my products to be phthalates-free, and while the powers that be claim that it is unknown how it is impacting health, check out this fairly well-documented article that indicates a link between breast cancer and phtalates. I don't know about you, but I don't want any of these ingredients in something as simple and basic and daily as my deodorant. If this is your deodorant, please know there is a safe, easy, affordable DIY Deodorant…
